“WHEN I AM A BIRD” AWARDED AT SIGNES DE NUIT FESTIVAL

The jury of the Signes de Nuit festival, held in Paris, gave the Signs Award for Documentary to “When I am a Bird” by Monika Pawluczuk. It is the first international award for this film.

The twelfth edition of the Signes du Nuit film festival in Paris was held from 15 to 21 September. Among the award winners, there is the documentary “When I am a Bird,” directed by Monika Pawluczuk, and produced by Wajda Studio. The jury, consisting of: Manola Antonioli, Otto Reiter and Nina Veligradi deciced to award “When I am a bird” with the film Signs Award in the category documentary film under 45 minutes. This award is given to films which express in a surprising way sensible and perturbing aspects of reality.

MuLa – the film's main protagonist - is a member of the Kajan tribe, and her neck is decorated by the characteristic golden circlets. Her life was not easy, she had to leave her home country Burma and look for shelter in Thailand while her only daughter remained abroad. MuLa earns a living selling souvenirs to the tourist, however, the family's financial situation is very difficult. The documentary by Monika Pawluczuk is a record of a woman's struggle with depressing fate and her unquenchable thirst for better life.
