“MY COUNTRY SO BEAUTIFUL” WINS AT FEBIOFEST

Cancelled and postponed, only to finally end yesterday. The organisers of the Slovak Febiofest will not remember this year's edition fondly. Unlike Grzegorz Paprzycki as his documentary received the award of the international jury.

International Film Festival Febiofest is an important film event held in Bratislava, the capital of Slovakia, since 1993. Initially, it was intended to focus on the local film market, but over time it began to open up to international films. The idea behind the event is to serve as a platform presenting arthouse cinema from around the world and promoting Slovak films. The Industry Days, held simultaneously to the competitions, also constitute an important part of the programme.

This year it featured two Polish documentaries – Marcin Polar’s “The Tough” and Grzegorz Paprzycki’s “My Country So Beautiful”

The awarded documentary’s ironic title refers to the general mood in Poland becoming increasingly radical over the past few years. According to the caption in the opening sequence, it is a “non-chronological documentation of selected social events”. The director juxtaposes marches, demonstrations, and street riots, as well as activities of anti-fascist organisations.
