FROM KRAKOW FILM FESTIVAL TO OSCARS

Krakow Film Festival, as the only festival in Poland, joined the group of prestigious Oscar-qualifying festivals for feature documentary films.

That means that the winner of the Golden Horn in the international documentary competition will be automatically taken into consideration during the Oscar selection. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences granted this privilege to 28 film festivals around the world including: Cannes, Berlinale, IDFA, DOK Leipzig.

This way the number of awards that shorten the path to Oscars for the films awarded at the Krakow Film Festival is growing. Until now a chance for an Oscar nomination was given to films from the short film competition: the winners of the Golden Dragon and three Silver Dragons.

This year the Golden Horn, the main award in the documentary competition, went to “Of Fathers and Sons” directed by Talal Derki. In the short film competition the Golden Dragon award was given to an animation “Keep Your Hair On, Olivier” (dir. Armelle Mercat). The Silver Dragon for the director of the best documentary film went to Michał Hytroś for his film “The Sisters”, the Silver Dragon for the director of the best animated film went to André Hörmanna and Samo (Anna Bergman) for their film “Obon”, and the Silver Dragon for the director of the best fiction went to Emmanuelle Fleytoux for her film “Release the Dogs”.

It is worth mentioning that Krakow Film Festival is also among 15 festivals nominating short films and among 10 festivals recommending feature documentary films for the European Film Awards. This year the nominated short film was a fiction film "Release the Dogs" (dir. Emmanuelle Fleytoux ), and the recommendation in the feature documentary film category went to a feature film "White Mama" (dir. Zosya Rodkevich, Evgeniya Ostanina).

The 91st Academy Award Ceremony will take place February 24th, 2019.

The 59th Krakow Film Festival will take place May 26th - June 2nd, 2019.
