"K2. TOUCHING THE SKY" WINS THE GRAND PRIX IN VANCOUVER

The run of luck for Polish documentary film at mountain film festivals continues. The Grand Prix of Vancouver International Mountain Film Festival went to "K2. Touching the Sky" by Eliza Kubarska.

At the festival in Vancouver, 75 films from 18 countries competed. The jury, consisting of  Chris McKillican, Joni Cooper, Julia Szucs and David Lavallee, after competition screenings and debates, decided to give the Festival's Grand Prix to the documentary film "K2. Touching the Sky," directed by Eliza Kubarska. Joni Cooper, explaining the choice, points out that the film is an emotional and important story, presenting a crucial aspect of mountain climbing, about which the Himalayan mountaineers often do not want to talk. She adds that the director asks questions, to which she does not give clear-cut answers, showing various points of views to the audience.

The documentary film by Eliza Kubarska presents the story of four people climbing to the base camp on K2. They go by the same road which was taken years ago by their parents - recognised Alpinists. They try to understand the power which ordered their parents to climb and which finally took their lives in 1986 in the K2 disaster. "K2.  Touching the Sky" is an emotional journey with breathtaking views of Karakoram in the background.

This is the second Polish film awarded the Grand Prize at the International Mountain Film Festival in Canada. Last year, the main prize went to "Jurek" by Paweł Wysoczański. You can find the full list of the winners on the festival's website.
