PAWEŁ CHORZĘPA’S “THE TUNERS” WINS AN AWARD IN JAPAN
The festival success of Paweł Chorzępa’s “The Tuners” continues. The short documentary has won the Best Documentary Award at the 21st Sapporo International Short Film Festival & Market. It marks another success for the film in Japan this year and another important stop on its impressive international festival journey.
This is yet another success for Paweł Chorzępa’s film in Japan. A few months earlier, “The Tuners” won the Non-Fiction Best Short Award at the Short Shorts Film Festival & Asia in Tokyo, where the jury praised the film’s sense of tension, musicality and the way it brings to the foreground people who usually remain behind the scenes.
The documentary began its international journey with its world premiere at FIPADOC in France. It later screened at festivals including Clermont-Ferrand and Tampere, before winning the Silver Dragon for Best Short Documentary at the 66th Krakow Film Festival. Since then, the film has continued to appear at festivals around the world, collecting further awards along the way.
“The Tuners” takes viewers behind the scenes of one of the world’s most prestigious piano competitions. While all eyes are on the pianists, tuners representing leading piano manufacturers spend days and nights working to perfect the sound of the instruments. Their experience, precision and finely tuned ears may ultimately influence which piano is chosen by the future winner. Chorzępa turns his attention to people who usually remain outside the spotlight, revealing a world in which craftsmanship, musical sensitivity and competition are every bit as intense as they are on stage.
Joanna Chorzępa of Bees Film House is the film’s producer, while KFF Sales handles its international festival distribution.
