SLOVAK AWARD FOR „THE WHISTLE”

On Thursday evening, the anniversary edition of Slovak Febio Fest came to an end. Among the awarded films Polish “The Whistle” triumphed while its author - Grzegorz Zariczny - received the award for the Best Short Film.

For the last 20 years Febio Fest – the biggest film festival in Slovakia -  has been presenting a varied programe of short, documentary and feature length films. After a week in Bratislava the festival hits the road to visit other Slovak cities. A novelty introduced to the programme this year was a competitive, short film section packed with 20 the latest films shot in Visegrad countries. Poland had five representatives in the set – apart from above mentioned  “The Whistle” also “Paper box” by Zbigniew Czapla, “Lumberjack” by Paweł Dębski, “All Souls’ day” by Aleksandra Terpińska and “Watermelon” by Tato Kotetishvili competed for the main award. After long deliberation the jury decided to hand in the main prize to “The Whistle” by Zariczny. Next year Ukraine will join the competitive section.

Slovak award is the second, after Best Documentary award at T-Mobile New Horizons, European trophy for “The Whistle” by Zariczny. Film was produced by Munk Studio operating in frame of Polish Filmmakers Association and coproduced by Full Film Service.

Marcin is a young man that comes from a small village near Krakow. The film pictures him from three perspectives - his private life, his work life and his hobby - which is football. In each of these fields he seems to be quite clumsy. He doesn't rush his way towards adulthood - which his mother doesn't approve of. She expects him to make life-changing decisions, finding a better job and a wife. Marcin is also a burgeoning football referee - every week he has to bear unrefined comments and remarks about his work, made by players and fans alike of amateur teams.

Febio Fest was held between 15th and 21st March in Bratislava
