POLISH DOCUMENTARIES IN KARLOVY VARY

The 46th Karlovy Vary International Film Festival will screen 179 feature films, 54 debuts, 21 world premieres and 25 international ones. In the programme of this one of the most important film festivals in Europe there are also three Polish documentaries.

During the 46th Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, which will be held in the beginning of July, 15 titles will take part in the documentary competition. There are two Polish films among them: “Declaration of Immortality” by Marcin Koszałka and “At the Edge of Russia” by Michał Marczak. What is more, in the non-competitive programme „2011: A Musical Odyssey” the documentary “Komeda – Soundtrack for a Life” by Claudia Buthehoff-Duffy will be screened as well.

Marcin Koszałka’s film offers a portrait of a legend among Polish rock climbers, Piotr Korczak. Using innovative techniques to develop a multilayered film language, the director presents a disturbing portrait of a professional climber’s solitary struggle with ageing and mortality.

Young Polish documentarist Michał Marczak’s directorial debut takes us to the very edge of northern Russia. There, not far from the icy Arctic Ocean, in a place hundreds of kilometers from the nearest residence, one of the last border stations still operates under the supervision of five veteran soldiers and a rookie.

The documentary by Claudia Buthehoff-Duffy about jazzman and film composer Krzysztof Komeda (Rosemary’s Baby) examines attitudes in an era of post-war political and cultural transformation, and also the work and exodus of Polish artists. The film gives voice to Komeda’s friends and colleagues, including directors Roman Polanski, Jerzy Skolimowski and Andrzej Wajda.
