KOSZAŁKA – PRIZE-WINNER IN KARLOVE VARY

“Till it hurts”, documentary by Marcin Koszałka, received special jury award in the films to 30 minutes at the International Film Festival in Karlove Vary.

During the awards ceremony, which took place in the Grand Hall of Thermal Hotel, the director said: ”I dedicated this film to my parents. I wanted to say something banal: a documentary film can change the world.”

The film is the fourth part of the TVP2 documentary cycle “Decalogue after Decalogue” which commemorates the 20th anniversary of Krzysztof Kieślowski’s “Decalogue”. It tells the story of a 53-year-old psychiatrist who lives with his overprotective mother. When another woman appears in his life, a conflict breaks out. After many years of sexual abstinence, Ewa made him feel like a real man again. However, his mother does everything in her power to force him to give up this relationship.

The prize at Karlove Vary festival is not the first one for the documentary „Till it hurts”. The film received many awards earlier: the Silver Dragon at 48th Krakow Film Festival and the Golden Dove – the main prize at 51st International Documentary and Animated Films Festival in Leipzig. It was also shown at the prestigious festival Silverdocs in Washington and at the International Film Festival in Moscow.

“Till it Hurts” was the only one Polish representative in Karlove Vary in the documentary category, but 8 feature films produced or co-produced by Poland could be seen at this year’s festival. These include “Piggies” by Robert Gliński in the main competition (Filip Garbacz received the special jury award for acting). During the Saturday show, Marcin Koszałka received an award for photography in the film “Scratch” by Michał Rosa, which was shown in the competition category East of the West.

Marcin Koszałka is documentary films director and feature films cameraman, and also a valued teacher in University of Silesia Krzysztof Kieślowski Radio and Television Department in Katowice. He made his debut as cameraman in “The Streaks” by Magdalena Piekorz. For the photography for this film he received an award at the festival in Gdynia. His directing debut was the documentary film “Such a nice boy I gave birth to”, shot 5 years earlier and awarded Prix Europa in Berlin.
