“PIANOFORTE” AND “IN UKRAINE” AWARDED AT VISIONS DU REEL

Polish documentaries once again returned from the prestigious Swiss event with awards and distinctions. Jakub Piątek's film delighted the audience, while In Ukraine impressed the jurors.

Visions du Reél has been organised in the Swiss city of Nyon since 1969. In the early days, the Nyon festival mainly screened Swiss films and productions from so-called Eastern Bloc countries – which were very difficult for Western audiences to see. Nowadays Visions du Reél is one of the largest documentary film festivals in Europe. This year's edition of the festival took place on 20–30 April.

Pianoforte by Jakub Piątek captivated the audience at the Swiss event. The documentary received the Audience Award in the Grand Angle competition. The awarded film is an intimate portrait of young musicians participating in the legendary Chopin Competition. The production was very well received by festival decision-makers and was successfully pitched multiple times. The documentary was produced by Telemark.

In Ukraine by Tomasz Wolski and Piotr Pawlus received a special mention. When Russia began military actions against civilians, Europeans united to accept nearly 8 million refugees from Ukraine. What happened to those who never left and those who came back home? Does “home” still mean the same to them? Filmmakers Piotr Pawlus and Tomasz Wolski show what life is like in bombed towns and burned-down villages.
