Anasy Doc­u­ment­ary Awards are given out. From among sev­eral dozen doc­u­ment­ary films from around the world, two Pol­ish ones received the highest distinctions.

Anasy Doc­u­ment­ary Awards is one of the largest film events in the Arabic world. It spe­cial­izes in the doc­u­ment­ary cinema. This year’s edi­tion took place from 25^th April to 9^th May in Abu Dhabi. In the com­pet­i­tion screen­ings, sev­eral doc­u­ment­ar­ies from dif­fer­ent corners of the world, also from Poland, were shown. Even more, two rep­res­ent­at­ives of Pol­ish cine­ma­to­graphy received extremely high awards. The Sil­ver Award went to Beata Dzi­anow­icz for the film “Kites” and the Best Dir­ector award was given to Paweł Łoziński, the author of the doc­u­ment­ary “Chemo”.

“Kites” are a film record of con­tem­por­ary Kabul from the per­spect­ive of a seventeen-​year-​old. The doc­u­ment­ary tells also about the film pas­sion, born in the young paint­ers and musi­cians. Using the cam­era, Jacek Petrycki traces the way through which the stu­dents go: from the fever­ish attempts at tak­ing an impress­ive shot of the rush­ing wheels of rick­shaw, through the time when the video cam­era stops to be a toy and becomes a tool, to this extraordin­ary moment when stand­ing oppos­ite their prot­ag­on­ists, they for­get about the cam­era and start to listen.

“Chemo” is a col­lect­ive por­trait of the Warsaw onco­lo­gic clinic’s patients. The prot­ag­on­ists, tak­ing another dose of “chemo” talk about every­day mat­ters, their favour­ite dishes, wed­ding dresses but also their plans for the future, dreams, fear and anxi­ety, about hope… The video cam­era records these dia­logues, often full with humour and irony, with great sub­tlety, and at the same time reveal­ing to the view­ers the truths and val­ues, which emerge from the dis­tance of the hospital.
