THE RUNAWAY

POLISH TITLE: UCIEKINIER

Four prisoners disguised and armed as SS soldiers managed to escape on the 20th  of June 1942 from the Concentration Camp Auschwitz-Birkenau in the car of the camp’s Vice Commander.

The initiator of the breakout, the only one among  the four fugitives still alive, 86 year-old Kazimierz Piechowski (camp no. 913), whose spirit was not broken during his time spent in jail in Stalinist communistic Poland either, reveals the details of this incredible escape and describes the indelible mark it has left on his whole life.

Previously unpublished photographs discovered during the production of the movie showing SS-men from Auschwitz in private life situations complete the story.
The strength of “|The Runaway” lies not only in the incredibly charismatic figure of the central character of this chronicle but also in the innovative and emotional way in which this story was told and realised, thanks to which it appeals to a wide range of viewers worldwide.
